THE ROT
Darkness has descended over Helsingør. The city's inhabitants are intertwined in a twilight landscape of murky folklore and occult nightmare tales, which feel claustrophobically impossible to wake from. Evil is given free reign—and this is only to be expected when something is already rotten in the kingdom of Denmark.

Darkness has descended over Helsingør. Debutante Ditte Maja Noach writes spine-chilling stories with a pen that reaches toward authors like Grete Roulund and Astrid Ehrencron-Kidde. What is refreshing about Noach's approach to the horror genre is her ability to use its alienating potential to create a socially conscious undertone, sharply addressing contemporary issues such as free abortion, free sexuality, and feminist liberation. In this way, Noach is both a breakthrough in Danish literature and a continuation of a literary tradition we have long overlooked.
The award-winning illustrator, John Kenn Mortensen, known for his intricate lines and always a guarantor of visual horrors, has illustrated the work and added the amount of bizarre terror that the text demands.

What the press says:
"Originally crafted and excellently written."
– Politiken
"In short, The Rot is an excellent anthology that shows Noach is a competent storyteller, able to create atmosphere, immersion, and horror in just a few pages. Beyond the obvious appeal of acquiring a new Danish horror anthology, one of Kapellet’s favorites, John Kenn Mortensen, has provided both the cover and a series of title images for each of the five stories. This, along with the beautiful layout and print (which Baggaardsbaroner excels at), makes the release look truly stunning and inviting."
– Kulturkapellet
"It’s an exceptionally beautiful debut! I’m struggling to contain my excitement; even though several of the short stories are truly dark and nauseating, they are written with such a great literary surplus. I could easily be led to believe that Ditte Maja Noach and John Kenn Mortensen were not born naturally on this earth, but simply stepped out of a Hieronymus Bosch painting."
